Contemporary Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program

General Description

The CPPP is a 2-year clinical training experience rooted in the values, attitudes and listening perspectives that are illuminated by the clinical theories of Self Psychology, Intersubjectivity and Attachment research. The excitement, creativity and diversity at the heart of these contemporary perspectives inspire students’ personal and professional development. Through classroom teaching and discussion, group and individual case consultation, and personal psychotherapy (*) participants expand their self-exploration, personal growth, critical thinking and clinical understanding and effectiveness.

The CPPP traditionally begins a new cohort every two years. Our faculty has been stable for years, but after several recent retirements, we find that some rebuilding will be required. We intend to start a new cohort in the fall of 2026. Stay tuned!

Program Details, Expectations and Requirements

Didactic: Five theory courses (6-weeks per course) are offered each year over the two-year program cycle. A weekly clinical case consultation course is offered in conjunction with each theory course, with special focus on the application of theory to participants’ clinical cases. For more details about the program curriculum, click here.

While weekly class attendance is expected, it is understood that a student may be unable to attend every class in-person due to illness or other excused absence. For such cases, class sessions are recorded. Class recordings will be made available for any missed sessions so students may stay current with the course material. We expect students to be mindful of the impact of absences upon the group and teaching dynamics. Participants are urged to make it a priority to be present for classes for, not only for their own benefit, but also for the benefit of the cohort and faculty.

Individual Supervision: Participants are required to complete 30 hours of individual supervision from an approved contemporary relational psychotherapist who will assist them with integration of theory and clinical practice. Individual supervision may commence any time following the first 12 weeks of their program.

Personal Psychotherapy: (*) While not a program requirement, participants are strongly urged to engage in their own personal psychotherapy with a contemporary psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapist. Doing so offers both an opportunity for continuing personal growth and enlarges one’s capacity for empathic understanding and responsiveness in one’s clinical work. (The Institute will be happy to assist students with referrals if requested.)

Schedule: All classes are held on Fridays from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. (30 weeks per year, September – May, for two years).

Location: Classes are conducted primarily online via Zoom. At the beginning of each semester, there will be one in-person class (4 in-person classes total over two years). Attendance to these in-person meetings is expected, but you may contact us and exceptions can be made as necessary.

Eligibility: This program is for mental health professionals who have completed a minimum of a Master’s level graduate psychotherapy degree, are licensed to practice independently (or who are in a licensure process working under the supervision of a licensed psychotherapist), and are seeking to deepen their clinical understanding, skills and effectiveness drawing upon the core theoretical perspectives taught at the Institute.

Participants are required to carry their own malpractice insurance.
